Bolivia – Travel Destination Tips on Where to Go

By admin, January 13, 2010 7:52 am

Where to visit in Bolivia

When in Sucre cheesy as the ‘dino mobile’ looks a trip to the dinosaur footprints will exceed your expectations.  The cost of a visit is cheap and the prints are extensive – it’s just such a shame & quite unbelievable that such a treasure is still part of a working quarry.  The prints scale a sheer rock face which shakes with dynamite explosions from the base even as you watch - let’s hope that UNESCO win their battle and these footprints are preserved for future generations.

Do not miss the world wonder which is the salt flats of Uyuni.  There are 2 choices of trip – either a 1 day trip out to the salt flats & back or a 3 day trip across the salt flats and on in to San Pedro De Atacama – Chile.  If Chile is on your travel path then this is proably the best trip to take as you will see all the attractions of the salt flats along with the red & green lagoons & flamingos.  The 1 day trip will however cover the salt flats element and from Uyuni you can get an overnight train down to the border with Argentina.  These trains do not leave every day though so worth checking before you arrive to avoid a prolonged stay in Uyuni.  Once in Uyuni every shop is a travel agent and trying to choose who to go with blows your mind – all offer pretty much the same thing the decider needs to be how good their English is and the state of their vehicles.  All operators have books with reviews from previous travellers so have a read of these before you decide.  We did it with Oasis tours (www.oasistours-bo.com)

La Paz is the unofficial capital of Bolivia and  the biggest city at high altitude in the world.  It´s a fascinating city, full of markets .. including the notorious witches market where Bolivians buy llama foetuses which hang in the doorways of all the shops – they´re believed to bring good luck if placed in the foundations of a building. For all those that have read ´Marching powder´ – yes the prison is still there but unfortunately when we were there nosy backpackers were no longer permitted access (although in Bolivia money talks so if you’re feeling brave it could be worth a try!).

Training for CompTIA Network Plus Support Examined

By admin, January 10, 2010 7:33 pm

In the modern world, support workers who can solve problems with PC’s and networks, and offer regular solutions to users, are indispensable in every sector of the business environment. As we are getting progressively beholden to advanced technology, we also inevitably become more dependent on the commercially qualified network engineers, who maintain those systems. If you may be starting with a training company which is still using workshops as a benefit of their course, then listen to these issues encountered by almost all students: * Constant visits to the centre – very long trips in more cases than not. * Asking for time off work – typical schools will only provide Monday to Friday workshop availability – typically grouping 2 or 3 days together. To be honest, this doesn’t suit working people, and this is made worse if travelling time is added into the mix. * The majority of us find four weeks vacation allowance is barely enough. Take away at least half of this for study events and see how much more difficult it makes things. * Because of the cost involved, most training providers make the classes quite large – not ideal (and far less personal). * Tension can be created in many classes where students want to progress at their own pace. * Soaring travel costs – travelling to the training college together with over-night bed and breakfast can really add up with each visit. Assuming just five to ten workshops at a cost of 35 pounds for one night’s accommodation, plus 40 pounds for petrol and food at 15.00, that equates to 450-900 pounds of extra costs to cover. * Training privacy can be high on the list of priorities to most students. Why give up potential advancement, wage increases or achievement in your job because of your studies. When your boss discovers you’ve committed to training in another area entirely, what will they think? * We all find it difficult to ask questions while sitting with our fellow attendees – to avoid appearing stupid. * Living away for part of your working week – a minority of trainees find they have to work or live away for certain parts of their training. Workshops are hard to get to, but you’ve already paid for them as part of your fees. The most impressive solution rests with watching a pre-made workshop – providing direct instruction whenever it’s convenient for you. Think… If you have a laptop you’re able to study absolutely anywhere you want (within reason!) And 24 hr-a-day support is just a web-browser away if you hit challenges. Repeat any of the classes as often as you want – repetition aids memory. And note-taking is gone forever – everything is already ready to go. Basically: You save on money, time, hassle and altogether avoid polluting the skies. A lot of trainees assume that the school and FE college system is the right way even now. Why then are commercially accredited qualifications becoming more in demand? With the costs of academic degree’s becoming a tall order for many, alongside the IT sector’s general opinion that corporate based study most often has much more commercial relevance, we have seen a big surge in Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe certified training routes that provide key skills to an employee at a much reduced cost in terms of money and time. This is done through focusing on the actual skills required (alongside an appropriate level of background knowledge,) rather than spending months and years on the background non-specific minutiae that degree courses can get bogged down in – to pad out the syllabus. In simple terms: Recognised IT certifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for – the title says it all: as an example – I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Windows XP Administration and Configuration’. Consequently an employer can look at their needs and which qualifications are needed for the job.

Black Men…all Men, We as African American Women, Have Now Seen the Light

By admin, November 27, 2009 9:19 pm

Obama’s Message:

Plea: BLACK MEN …all men

Hope it is not too late

President Elect Barack Obama ’s subliminal message was empowered with fortitude, obedience to God and for his love of his nation.  Not by the stroke of a pen but by his very actions before, during and after his election re remained the same person.

What he showed was that to believe is the first step of self growth.  His weapon was education was the second..  His third choice was honesty which he practiced “ to be true to your word”. “To give back” was his fifth.  And, last but not least, choosing a mate that matched his soul.

Seeming tireless, this man worked endlessly until his goal was achieved.  It was kinda like the slave forging towards the land of freedom despite the hazards of rain, snow, sleet, wind and hail.  The shortcuts, I presumed were  often times considered may have been blocked but he had no trouble turning  and trying another route to reach his destination.  He kept focus with his goal and forge ahead not hurting but helping those alone the way.

Here, a man who saw potential in our youth.  He ,believing and trusting in our  “future’s” dedication and their willingness to learn, provided them teaching tools to succeed. He offered them no “pipe dreams”.  He taught them what hard work would bring.  Success.   He took time to give kind words to praise them of their daily jobs. (Something others, like myself when politics were hectic, would have taken for granted) Not during his victory but all along the way he took time to listen, learn, share and care.

I , an African American Republican, sat in on first meeting listening to Michelle Obama.  I had titles galore and had major victories under my belt.  A system that I felt comfortable in because I had made it to ”my” top.  I called senators by their first names. Three presidents, I had their direct telephone numbers to.  I could demand other elected officials audience and they would be there.  I was often commended on my job well done.  When I would attend community meeting or church gatherings I was called “Mrs. Republican”.  I would wave my hand when my name was announced.  It always was.

The Obama meeting was a grassroots invite. I really came to find fault in a person of color trying to challenge our system. Subconsciously, I perhaps, felt that their winning would eliminate me from my power throne. To my surprise, never once did she gloat about what they had but what they were willing to give back to our country.  She made a plea that  in order to achieve this we must unite, share our knowledge and give back from where we came.

She asked for no commitments.  She just asked us to consider her request.  I was shocked,  no begging for money.? No passing of the basket?

So, I decided to try and continue to discredit her.  I went to various Obama Offices unannounced to try and catch a flaw. ( Like the “House Nigger”, if I could find anything wrong I was running back to tell it.)  To my amazement I saw each time a power house of the United Nations working together.

I saw the young, the old, the rich and the poor.  I saw those educated and those not.  I saw people who were African Americans, Asians, Hispanic, Germans, Irish, Arabs, Africans and so forth.  All of them working together sharing information.  No one was any more important than the other.  No one complaining.  Everyone greeting you with a smile.  When, I did not say I would participate they still treated me with the same courtesy and remained friendly.  Nothing changed…it remained the same. These volunteers remained focus and dedicated in what they believed in.

It was not the notoriety of people who came and traveled to give support that impressed me.  It was the organization itself.  I had been there, done that and have the “tee” shirt and cap to wear.  But, this was something new.

The unity and consistency and the repetitive working with no one complaining and gossiping.  The turn downs did not stop these  workers bees.  I began to think “hey, I had better get on this train before it is too late.”

You may ask what does all the former essay has to do with our Black Men or men in general?  It is very short and to the point.  By observation I must  once again get on the train before it too late and share this new bit of information.

Black Men…all men  we as African American Women, have now seen the light.  We have seen what Michelle Obama has chosen for a mate.  We are now allowed a second chance to regroup to look our “Obama’s” out there.

Michelle Obama has found a man that she respects. I am for sure, she did not look at the color of his skin but the content of his character.   A man who is hard working.  A man who may not know how to really dance (saw him on one of the talk shows) but can groove in his own way.  A man who speaks the truth.  A man who has no shame in calling his wife his “rock”.  A man who will show the world that his loves his woman.  A man who has the desire to stay with one woman and remain faithful. Last but not least he has a special bond with his children. You can see the glow in their eyes when he is around.

Our Plea:

Men do not move away from us. Men you are not required to wear the bling bling or blam blam.  Men we called nerds are nerds no longer.  Men with potential but are not making as much as we are is no longer a problem.  The men who may not say the right thing at the right time is no longer the reason for rejection.  Men who want to be with us can keep on wearing double knits or double thick glasses or glasses at “tall” is all right.  Last but not least, men who have a dream, we are willing to work along you side.

Like my momma always said and now I understand, “if you mess with trash it will get in your eye.” We as sisters are no longer digging in the bottom of the barrel.

Your gap year guide to travel in Australia

By admin, November 18, 2009 1:23 am

A firm favourite with gap year travellers, there are some very good reasons behind Australia’s enduring popularity; its location makes it a perfect stop off on a round the world ticket and a great place to wind down. An added bonus for English speakers is the lack of a language barrier, which makes earning money here much easier; the well developed infrastructure means that travelling around is no hassle; and as if that wasn’t enough; the country has a natural beauty to rival any of its more exotic neighbours

Australia is that rarest of things; a tropical country which can afford to fit air conditioning in most of its public buildings! Gappers who will spend a lot of time both in and out of doors will certainly appreciate it! That in a nutshell is the appeal of Australia; breathtaking beauty in a user-friendly package. Keep reading the see how Australia ranks on the trusty Gapometer.

*****        Gaptastic

****         Great for gappers

***           Worth a look

**             Too much else to see

*              Never mind the Gap

Volunteer work

The dangers of environmental damage are known only too well here. The landscape may look rugged but it’s no match for global warming; one of the driest countries in the world is getting drier and it’s having a huge effect on all life here, human and wild. Since European settlers landed, the continent has lost a huge number of its natural species; conservation work here gets less press than in many countries around the world but the Australian Conservation Foundation is becoming increasingly concerned about the situation. If you’re thinking of doing something useful on your gap year then volunteering in Australia may be just the thing fro you.

**** A less high-profile victim of global warming, the area still needs you

Exploring

One of Australia’s greatest advantages for the gapper is its proximity to Asia. A short hop and you’re in the heart of Asia, enjoying temples and tuk-tuks. The handy ‘round the world’ ticket pretty much guarantees that Australia features on most people’s itinerary but if you’re going to use your time to explore Australia then bring a good book! As the world’s largest island, transfers can be lengthy; air travel is a popular way of getting around. Look for deals that give you multiple flights within a certain period of time.

Contrary to most countries, bus transport is excellent with air-conditioned, video-equipped buses that will put your hostel room to shame. Remember that public transport is better on the glitzy east coast than in other parts of the country; train travel here is for enthusiasts rather than people in a hurry. The Indian Pacific is a great way to see a huge amount of the country and unless you get travel sick it’s well worth fitting into your schedule. If you’re travelling in the wild, make sure you check out some outback safety tips, because you don’t want to get stuck there.

**** Varies across the country but overall no hindrance to great travel

Money

Fun as it is to start planning diving in coral reefs and traversing the Outback, first of all you should give careful thought to your budget. The last thing you want is to leave for a year and have to cut your journey short because of a lack of cash. Avoid the famous one-armed bandits though and money shouldn’t stand in the way of a great trip. Remember the lack of a language barrier always presents opportunities for work even if you do run short.

As in most countries, you can have a frugal or extravagant travel experience here. Smaller towns make almost no dent in your wallet while the eastern coast is a more expensive area in which to travel (they don’t call it the Gold Coast for nothing)! You won’t live as cheaply as in Asia or Africa but living costs here are still extremely cheap in some areas. If you decide to explore after you finish doing some volunteering make sure you plan a round trip back to your arrival city as a return flight home will cost you less than two singles.

**** Not as cheap as Africa and Asia but just as cheerful!

The wow factor

There can be a tendency to think of Australia as a home away from home and as such, not as exotic as other countries in the area. However, as much as language, food and music will remind you of home here, the Outback, Great Barrier Reef, tropical North and stunning Blue Mountains provide more than enough of an exotic travel experience.

**** More different than you think
