Most Common Variables Considered When Calculating Travel Insurance Rates

By admin, December 24, 2009 7:34 pm

Travel insurance is a form of limited or special situation insurance that covers loss arising from a specific event. This could be flying in an airplane or riding in a train. The policies are based on the behavior of a group of individuals engaged in an activity and the likelihood that a loss will occur.
Travel insurance is rated based on the occurrence of a loss as it affects a group of common interest, such as airline passengers. This differs from individual coverage, which rates the risk of loss occurring based on the personal preferences and habits of the insured. It would be difficult to use individual underwriting standards such as age and health status to travel insurance since not everybody flies in an airplane.
Group insurance factors in the community experience of the group as a whole in order to access the probability that loss will occur. Community experience factors can include the number of air disasters in a given region, or in a given year, or by a given carrier. When assessing loss exposure on a group basis it is easy to discern certain trends and patterns regarding the chance of loss. Since air travel is deemed safe with air disasters occur very infrequently (roughly 1 in 2.5 million), the rates for travel insurance is very low.
If you accept that activities such as air travel are safe with a low probability of occurring, why the need to buy travel insurance? Insurance is about something not happening, as oppose to a loss occurring. Insurance provides a way to restore value in the event of a loss and for some, having the piece of mind that some benefit may be available may be important.
Travel insurance policies are typically issued in kiosks at an airport. It may also appear as a rider associated with a credit card or to a person’s property and casualty indemnity coverage. However it is purchase, the benefit provided is a low amount of coverage, maybe no more than $25,000 (although a few higher death benefit policies exist). This is done based on the community experience-rating factor that looks at the incident of death or dismemberment occurring based on the chance of an airline disaster.
How old you are, how physically fit you may be, whether you smoke or not, are all rating factors or variables that are not important to issuing travel insurance. None of those factors has an impact on a plane taking off and landing and the likelihood that a crash will occur. That the instances of plane crashes are so low suggests that very limited factors need to be considered when pricing travel insurance.
Insurance is based on a concept of risk transfer. This means that the individual pays a premium amount that insures that if something were to happen, the insurance will provide a benefit to compensate the policy’s beneficiary. The amount paid in premium is low relative to the potential benefit that is paid. The insurance company rates the potential for loss and prices its policy accordingly so that it is able to pay if that loss occurs. The higher probability that a loss can occur means a higher premium. Applying group underwriting principles to travel insurance helps provide a product that is low cost and pays a uniform benefit.

Travel Insurance to Warning Free Greece

By admin, December 5, 2009 7:48 am

Europe is the new desirable destination for personal, business and student travel. When traveling, for variable reasons, one must focus on the most important aspect of any voyage: insurance. This may be a thought pushed to the side as other preparations take precedence, such as exact location, travel details, packing – what to take and what not to take, etc. However, once in the area of destination anything can happen. It is best to be as prepared as possible. Take the time to read some of the latest insurance tips for travel, specifically to Greece. The destination point will be Greece; however, the tips will be helpful with traveling throughout all of Europe.
Studying abroad is becoming more popular and especially in Europe. With the added experience to add to resumes to a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten, students are taking extra steps to see that they are receiving as much knowledge, world knowledge, as possible. Having this in mind realize that these students are entering a new culture and this means a completely new way of living. Insurance is a crucial element to be sure that one will get the same treatment in the new country as their citizens. There are many travel insurance companies for students that are inexpensive, set out to genuinely help, and have great benefits. Often students are even reimbursed for prescribed medicines. An example of student travel insurance is HTH insurance.
This same company also provides travel insurance in general whether it is for business or pleasure. One can simply get a price quote before signing up with the insurance company and once an acceptable quote is found take the next steps. The next step could be one of a few different things. It is a good idea to check out any travel warnings that may have been issued. Online the travel insurance company of choice will have a link leading to all warnings. At this moment there are no warnings against Greece. After looking at any warnings one should research what to do in emergency situations, all can be found online. It is important to have already located the U.S. Embassy in said destination. Also, be sure to look upon the health and safety issues page. Families, including those with children, need to be aware of any issues concerning them which can be found online, such as adoption, child protection and abduction.
Having the insurance is the first major step of being precautious and prepared. Still one needs to take it upon themselves to be aware of the destination rules, regulations, ways of being, or any information regarding the country specifically. As for Greece, one can see entry or exit requirements, safety and security, crime, information for victims of crime, medical facilities and health information, medical insurance, traffic safety and road conditions, aviation safety oversight, special circumstances, criminal penalties, children’s issues and registration or embassy location. It is even urged by the Department of State that before Americans leave the country they consult their medical insurance company to be sure that their insurance works abroad and what exactly will be covered in case of any emergencies. This section will be helpful in other ways as well, such as road conditions. In Greece all motorbikers must wear helmets as some roads are poorly maintained or narrow. In case of road emergencies, in need of towing, roadside services are also available such as ELPA which is similar to that of AAA with a phone number used nation-wide 10400.
Hospitals in Greece are adequate as many of their trained doctors studied in the U.S. and can be found even in private hospitals. The Department of State can be helpful in areas concerning certain vaccinations or for further in-depth tips on particular circumstances.

Fsa’s New Regime for Travel Insurance

By admin, November 30, 2009 12:43 am

As the Financial Services Authority finally ushers in new regulations to guide the sale of travel insurance, many people will certainly hail this innovation. In the same vein many people may see it as counterproductive and unnecessary. The rules, intending to provide more protection as well as guidance for people taking out travel insurance in the UK, is billed to come into force on January 1, 2009. But the stage seems fully set for the take-off.In a couple of weeks’ time the FSA will throw the doors open for applications to be sent in by those wanting to be registered with them as members or representatives of intermediaries. This is a necessary step to enable them continue the sale of the policies as stipulated by the new rules. Why the new regulations, one may ask? It had been observed that travellers were always ending up with the wrong policy as a result of inappropriate counselling. In the end people expecting to find certain features in their policy find out that such things are not part of the deal. This problem arises from the fact that travel agents usually sell travellers the insurance policy bundled with holidays. Also, in the event of any disputes, where things went wrong, it was found that travellers often discovered that they were not granted the same level of redress.Investigating the claims and the circumstances surrounding them the regulatory body came to the conclusion that travel agency staff selling the policies were not usually trained for the job. And policyholders were not properly told of the terms of the policy being sold to them while taking it out. These findings informed the decision to amend the rules and make it compulsory for travel agents to register with the authority as members or representatives of intermediaries to be able to sell the cover. This will require formal training for staff who are entrusted with the responsibility of selling insurance to travellers. As much as the main intent is to provide greater customer protection and satisfaction, the changes would lead to a higher level of professionalism in the sale of travel insurance. More so, it will help in forestalling the likely crisis that would arise from the sale of inadequate or unsuitable cover to travellers. But the new regime will not come without opposition. While many claim it is timely and appropriate, there are groups who think it will not only take away business from their affiliates, but it will also erode the enthusiasm among travellers to purchase the cover. The Association of British Travel Insurers (ABTA) is one of those with such belief. A spokesman for ABTA recently warned that the move could affect both the agents and people taking out travel insurance, leading to fewer sales. “There are surprises here. Some of our members are likely to stop selling insurance and fewer people will travel with insurance,” he was quoted saying.Whether such claims will turn out to be real or not remains to be seen. What is crucial at the moment is the take-off date and preparations on ground. FSA director of policy and themes, Dan Waters said that firms had been advised to apply well in advance of the start of the new scheme. “Regulation is only seven months away and firms need to make sure they are fully prepared. We start accepting applications next month and firms are advised to apply early to ensure that they are ready in good time for the start of the new regulation next January,” he added. As we await these rules to come into force, it’s hoped the desired results will be achieved, especially as Mr Waters said their rules have been designed to secure protection for customers.
